Odoo and Onfinity are both open source ERPs. Both have a free edition. Both have paid
editions. So the question is not “which one is open source”. The question is what is
inside each edition, and what you pay for.
This post answers that in plain terms. At the end, three questions decide which one
fits.
What is free, and what is paid
Odoo has two editions. Odoo Community is free and open source. Odoo
Enterprise is paid, per user per month. The Accounting app and Payroll are part of
Enterprise. Community has invoicing. The prices are on odoo.com.
Onfinity has four editions. Pluto is free and open source. It has
the full accounts: ledger,
payables, receivables, bank and cash. It also has materials, purchase, sales, customers,
manufacturing, projects and HR. What Pluto does not have is Indian GST, e-Invoicing and
payroll. Those start at Onfinity SME Cloud: ₹1,999 per user per month, plus
₹70 per employee per month for payroll and self-service. Nova, for several plants
or entities, is priced on request. All
of this is on one page, with what is not in the licence.
So the free edition is different in each. In Odoo, the accounts are paid. In Onfinity,
the accounts are free and the Indian tax is paid.
Accounts and GST
In Onfinity, CGST, SGST and IGST follow the place of supply. Nobody chooses the tax on
each invoice. The e-Invoice with its IRN and signed QR code comes from the invoice. The
e-Way bill is generated from the same document, and can be cancelled from it. TDS is
deducted on bills and on payments, at different rates when needed. TCS is handled on the invoice. PAN, TAN and the
MSME flag are on the party record. HSN and SAC codes are on the product.
Odoo also has an Indian localisation for GST. Which parts of it need the Enterprise
edition is on odoo.com. Check that before you compare prices.
The plant
Both products have a manufacturing app. The difference is in the details that matter
on an Indian shop floor.
In Onfinity, the MRP run explodes
the bill of material level by level. A make to order work order carries the sales order
line it was made for. Quality is checked against a tolerance band, with the measured
value recorded. And job work is
costed: material sent to the job worker, material received back, and the charge, all on
the same job. In India, that last one matters more than most.

For Odoo, the manufacturing features change by version and by edition. The edition

Payroll
In Onfinity, payroll is ₹70 per employee per month. It runs
from attendance
and leave to the payslip: EPF, ESI, professional tax and TDS on the same run.
Employees see their payslips and apply for leave themselves.
In Odoo, Payroll is part of the Enterprise edition, with an Indian localisation.
The technology
Odoo is written in Python and runs on PostgreSQL. Onfinity is written in C# on .NET
and runs on PostgreSQL or Oracle. Both can run in the cloud or on your own servers.
This matters for one reason: who will maintain it. If your IT team knows .NET and
PostgreSQL or Oracle, Onfinity is familiar. If it knows Python, Odoo is familiar.
Who sets it up
Both are set up by partners. Odoo has a large partner network in India. Onfinity has
partners in India too,
and Onfinity itself has a team in India. In both cases, ask the partner for two customers
in your industry, and call them.
Three questions that decide
1. Do you want the accounts in the free edition? In Onfinity, yes. In
Odoo, the Accounting app is paid. If you plan to start free and pay later, this is the
first difference.
2. Do you run a plant with job work? Then check job work costing,
make to order, and quality in a demo, with your own products. Not in a slide.
3. Do you have several plants or entities? Then the price per user is
the smaller part of the cost. Ask both for a full quotation: licence, implementation,
hosting and support, on one page.
